Along the Russian River a vacation can become a lifetime in the blink of an eye. The Russian River enters Sonoma County via Cloverdale before joining the Redwood Highway along the 101 corridor and receiving a boost from Lake Sonoma via Dry Creek’s steelhead salmon spawning grounds in Healdsburg, California. The river snakes through our favorite Sonoma County vacation spot in iconic Guerneville, California. The redwoods meet the river in Downtown Guerneville at Armstrong Redwoods State Park, eventually joining the Pacific Ocean at Jenner, California and Goat Rock Beach.

Goat Rock Beach’s big ocean swells and pounding waves make it one of the deadliest beaches in the nation, enjoyed only by the bravest sharks and surfers. But on the river side the rolling dunes shield visitors from the wind and provide a safe haven for children and seals alike in a wonderful shallow brackish lagoon at the mouth of the river. Kayaking here amongst playful leaping seals is our favorite thing to do right now in Sonoma County. We became engaged at River’s End, and now our family is working our way up through the Russian River Valley.
